The most romantic thing that I can think of is to grow old with you in the smog and pollution and share the gospel of Christ alongside you. The most romantic thing that I can think of is to have chemotherapy with you years later and to pray to God with you. The most romantic thing that I can think of, oh, my flesh and blood, is to share the same fate as you and to preach and live according to a true understanding of the gospel.

WANG YI

This is a transcribed and edited sermon delivered by Wang Yi to Grace to City, a nationwide conference of twelve hundred house church pastors and believers in Hong Kong in 2014. It begins to flesh out Wang Yi’s ecclesiology, as well as his theology of the city. He argues that the church is not simply a gathering of Christians for their individual, personal edification. The church is the city of God on earth, the promise of God with us, and salt to preserve a dying world. Speaking to those flocking to China’s booming urban centers, Wang Yi seeks to declare the true city that humanity is created to desire—God’s city, which is his church.
